MAY

vital growth

The month of May, once sacred to Apollo who personified spring in the myth of Bacchus (representing autumn), symbolizes hatching and renewal.

1 May was symbolic of vegetative energy forcing its way through barriers. In Rome, the festival of new leaves, when the young went out into the woods searching for spring buds, was an occasion for debauchery to celebrate the rising sap. This tradition has lingered on in France in the custom of giving lily of the valley on May Day.

• There was an old tradition that made it a day to respect authority; workers vowed fidelity to their master. French peasants also planted a tree, called the May tree, near the doors of their houses – see Tree.
